James Gunn Confirms When DC’s Superman: Legacy Starts Filming

James Gunn has confirmed a production start window for 2025’s Superman: Legacy.

On Threads, Gunn addressed a recent report regarding a Superman: Legacy plot synopsis and production start window. The reported plot synopsis reads, “Superman, a cub reporter in Metropolis, embarks on a journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent.”

Gunn said, “Not sure where this logline came from. I didn’t write it. It has elements of truth (obviously based on things I’ve said in the past). But I wouldn’t describe the plot this way, [and] I wouldn’t call Clark a cub reporter. He’s a thirty-year-old full-on reporter.”

He did, however, confirm that Superman: Legacy would begin filming in March 2024. “I’m grateful every day our production team worked their asses off to keep things going through the strikes,” Gunn continued. “Forces impelled us to stop many times — [and] if we had we’d never make July 2025.”

Who stars in Superman: Legacy?

DC Studios‘ Superman: Legacy will see David Corenswet, who is also appearing in the upcoming Twisters sequel next year, play the Man of Steel. Rachel Brosnahan is playing Lois Lane, while Skyler Gisondo is playing Jimmy Olsen and Sara Sampaio is playing Eve Teschmacher.

The cast also includes Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason, and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer. Sean Gunn has also been cast as Maxwell Lord in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU, though it’s unknown whether or not he’ll show up in Superman: Legacy at this time.

Written and directed by Gunn, Superman: Legacy flies into theaters on July 11, 2025. Prior to that, Gunn and Safran’s DCU kicks off in 2024 with an animated Creature Commandos series, which does not yet have an official release date.
