Margot Robbie has addressed whether or not she’ll return to the role of Harley Quinn.
In a recent interview with Variety, Robbie was asked if she has any plans to reprise her role as Harley Quinn or if she’s officially passing the baton on now that Lady Gaga is set to play the character in Joker: Folie à Deux, which takes place outside James Gunn and Peter Safran’s forthcoming DCU.
“I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters,” Robbie answered. “That was always the dream for her. Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, ‘What are they going to do with her?’ The options are endless.”

Robbie’s Harley Quinn debuted in 2016’s Suicide Squad, which was directed by David Ayer. She reprised the role in 2020’s Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, directed by Cathy Yan, before again returning for 2021’s The Suicide Squad, directed by Gunn.
Lady Gaga, meanwhile, is set to portray the character alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck in Joker: Folie à Deux, which is directed by Todd Phillips and is scheduled to release in the United States on October 4, 2024.
At this time, no casting announcement has been made for Harley Quinn in Gunn and Safran’s DCU; however, it’s worth mentioning that Gunn previously confirmed that Viola Davis will continue to reprise her role as Amanda Waller, who has frequent interactions with Robbie’s Quinn in both of the previous Suicide Squad movies.
The new DC shared universe kicks off in 2024 with an animated Creature Commandos series, which does not yet have an official release date, before David Corenswet will then portray the Man of Steel in Superman: Legacy, which is written and directed by Gunn. Superman: Legacy releases in United States theaters on July 11, 2025.
