Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

New Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire BTS Images Feature the Spengler Family and a Frosted Containment Unit

A pair of newly released behind the scenes images from Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire have the Spengler Family in familiar territory.

On X (formerly Twitter), Fandango released a pair of stills from the upcoming continuation of 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The first one features the new team of Gary Grooberson (Paul Rudd), Callie (Carrie Coon), Phobe (Mckenna Grace), and Trevor Spengler (Finn Wolfhard) standing in what appears to be an important office setting. The second image sees Gary and Callie uncovering frost and wreckage surrounding the infamous containment unit below the Ghostbusters‘ firehouse headquarters.

With co-writer Gil Kenan taking over directing duties from Afterlife’s Jason Reitman, the director teased how Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will take its cues from the original movies helmed by Ivan Reitman rather than the sentimental tone of Afterlife.

“Not a day went by when I didn’t ask myself, ‘How would Ivan [Reitman, who directed Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II] handle this?’” Kenan said. “I wanted that same approach to character, comedy, and scares he had on the first two Ghostbusters. This one feels more connected to those movies than Afterlife was.”

What is Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire about?

“In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started — the iconic New York City firehouse — to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level,” reads the movie’s official synopsis. “But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.”

Carrie Coon, Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, and Paul Rudd reprise their roles from 2021’s Afterlife. Additionally, original Ghostbusters stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts return to their iconic characters as well as the surprise return of William Atherton as Walter Peck from the original 1984 movie. Newcomers to the franchise include Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, and James Acaster.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire hits cinemas on March 22.
