Madame Web: S.J. Clarkson Talks Tonal Similarities to Jessica Jones

Madame Web director S.J. Clarkson has teased a gritty tone in line with her past work on Marvel’s Jessica Jones.

Speaking to Total Film about the upcoming installment of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, Clarkson revealed that her approach to the movie was to be as “grounded” and “gritty” as the Netflix series starring Krysten Ritter. She went on to compare the “loner” persona between Jones and Madame Web (Dakota Johnson) by describing how they are “a little bit abrasive, a bit quirky, and on the outer edges of things”.

“With JJ, she had PTSD,” Clarkson added. “That [sense of] reality to it was its success in a way. I suppose it’s the same with Madame Web.”

What is Madame Web about?

The official synopsis for Madame Web reads as follows: “In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures . . . if they can all survive a deadly present.”

Madame Web is directed by Clarkson who co-wrote the screenplay with Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, and Claire Parker. Johnson headlines the movie alongside Sydney Sweeney as Julia Cornwall, Celeste O’Connor as Mattie Franklin, Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon, and Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel Sims.

Madame Web is scheduled to arrive in theaters on February 14.
