After making a surprise cameo in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Donald Glover believes he has aged out of playing a live-action Miles Morales in a future project.
In an interview with Vanity Fair to promote his latest Amazon series Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Glover and his co-star Maya Erskine took on the publication’s Lie Detector Test when Erskine asked if the actor’s Spider-Verse cameo was “Sony’s way of apologizing for not casting you as Spider-Man.”
“No!” Glover said. “I don’t think they even thought about it. There’s definitely going to be like a Miles Morales live-action eventually, and I think they’re probably more concerned with me being Prowler in that or something like that. I’m too old to be Spider-Man now.”
Donald Glover’s connections to Spider-Man
As early as 2010, Glover’s name has been linked by Marvel fans as the top choice to play Miles in a Spider-Man movie. The actor encouraged fans to support the casting effort by pushing the hashtag #donald4spiderman on social media. Though Sony ignored the campaign, the popularity of Glover led to his casting as the voice of Miles in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series on Disney XD.
Glover made his MCU debut as Aaron Davis in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming starring Tom Holland in the title role. Though Davis does not take on his Prowler alter-ego from the comics, the character makes a passing reference to his nephew Miles when he assures the Wall-Crawler that he wants to protect his family and neighborhood from The Vulture’s (Michael Keaton) weapons. Glover reprised the role in Into the Spider-Verse as a live-action variant of The Prowler held captive by the Spider-Society.
The next installment in the animated Spider-Verse series, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is currently in production and does not have a release date. Meanwhile, the MCU’s Spider-Man 4 remains in active development with a rumored production start date of late 2024.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is currently streaming on Netflix.
