Green Arrow: Stephen Amell Reveals If He’d Reprise Role for James Gunn’s DCU

Stephen Amell, who played the Green Arrow Oliver Queen between 2012 and 2023 in the Arrowverse, has answered whether he would reprise the fan-favorite role for James Gunn’s DC Universe.

While promoting his upcoming movie Code 8: Part II at MegaCon Orlando (via X), the actor was asked if he’d consider playing the Emerald Archer for DC Studios. “Can we see one minute of film first,” he responded, referencing the fact that nothing from the DCU has been released yet. He then added, “Yeah, I’d do it.”

Amell first appeared as the Emerald Archer in The CW series Arrow, which was such a success for the network that it launched a shared universe dubbed the Arrowverse by fans. Airing alongside Arrow for most of its run were the equally successful superhero dramas The Flash, Supergirl, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, featuring a mixture of Arrow and The Flash supporting characters. Amell made many crossover appearances on the other Arrowverse shows, with his final appearance as Green Arrow being in a 2023 episode of The Flash.

Charlie Hunnam could have been the DCEU’s Green Arrow

While Green Arrow never appeared in the DC Extended Universe, Warner Bros.’ first attempt at a shared film universe, Warner Bros. reportedly wanted Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam to play the superhero.

In December 2023, Hunnam revealed that he had been approached by the studio to play the Emerald Archer, but turned down the offer. “Thanks, not interested,” he recalled saying to WB.

At the time of writing, Gunn has not announced any DCU projects featuring Green Arrow. The DCU kicks off later this year with Creature Commandos, followed by Superman: Legacy in July 2025.
