Nicolas Cage’s love for the Star Trek franchise has him interested in stepping foot on the USS Enterprise in a movie someday.
During a red carpet interview with ScreenRant at the 51st annual Saturn Awards, Cage revealed to the outlet that he had talks with Paramount about the potential for a role in a future Star Trek project if the script met his expectations.
“There were a couple of phone calls. I don’t know, I’d have to see a script. It would have to be something that I could really add my flavor to; have some pop and some spark,” Cage said. “I wouldn’t want to just do anything, because I have so much love for the franchise. I want to be on the Enterprise. Ideally, I’d have to be on the Enterprise in some capacity. I don’t want to be floating in space outside! I want to be on the bridge, but they have to bring it to me.”
Star Trek’s big screen future
While Cage did not specify which Star Trek movie he had calls with Paramount about, the one theatrical project that remains in question is the Kelvin Timeline-set Star Trek 4. Since the box office underperformance of Star Trek Beyond in 2016, the fourth installment of J.J. Abrams’ reboot series has seen numerous director and screenwriter turnovers that have left stars Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto frustrated.
As Star Trek 4’s development remains in “active development,” Paramount will be moving forward with a Kelvin Timeline prequel set decades before the 2009 reboot. Andor director Toby Hayes is set to helm the project with Seth Grahame-Smith attached as screenwriter. No release date has been announced.
Meanwhile, production has commenced on the Michelle Yeoh-led Star Trek: Section 31 where the Oscar-winning star reprises her role as Philippa Georgiou from the first season of Star Trek: Discovery. The synopsis reads, “Tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, [Georgiou] also must face the sins of her past.” Section 31 co-stars Omari Hardwick, Kacey Rohl, Sam Richardson, Sven Ruygrok, Robert Kazinsky, Humberly Gonzalez, and James Hiroyuki Liao. The Paramount+ exclusive movie does not have a release date.
