Madame Web star Dakota Johnson shares her reaction to Cassie Webb’s “Researching Spiders in the Amazon” line from the trailer, which turned into a popular meme on social media.
“Why did that go viral? Somebody brought this up, and I have no idea what it’s about,” Johnson said in an interview with HuffPost UK. “But isn’t any sentence out of context…out of context? What a silly thing….’He was in the Amazon researching spiders with my mom before she died.’ That seems like a basic storyline to me, but maybe I’m just underneath it.”
Aside from the trailer dialogue becoming an unintended viral sensation, Webb’s line serves as a key plot point in the movie regarding the connection between her mother and the main supervillain Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim). The character was conducting research on spiders in the Amazon with Webb’s mother until her death and gains the abilities of clairvoyance and super strength through a powerful spider. Unlike his comic book counterpart, the big screen version of Sims dons a costume similar to the black Spider-Man outfit.

Directed by S.J. Clarkson, who co-wrote the screenplay with Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, and Claire Parker. Dakota Johnson headlines the movie alongside Sydney Sweeney as Julia Cornwall, Celeste O’Connor as Mattie Franklin, Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon, and Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel Sims.
Madame Web is scheduled to arrive in theaters on February 14.
