Transformers Producer Provides Update on Franchise’s Future, G.I. Joe Crossover

Transformers franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura recently provided an update on the next live-action installment to the series, as well as the hotly-anticipated G.I. Joe crossover movie.

Speaking with Screen Rant, di Bonaventura shared that the Transformers movie set to be directed by Ángel Manuel Soto (Blue Beetle) is still without a final script. “We’re waiting for the script is where we’re going,” he revealed. “Thank you for asking. We don’t know yet, so we have to read a script. We don’t have one yet.”

In a separate interview with ComicBook.com, the producer updated fans on the Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover movie, which was teased at the end of 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. “The honest truth is I don’t know,” admitted di Bonaventura about when the crossover movie might begin production. “I know we are going to deliver on the promise we made.”

The next Transformers movie is an animated origin story for Optimus Prime

After Transformers: Rise of the Beasts failed to match the box office heights of its Michael Bay-directed predecessors, Paramount has opted to take the franchise in a new, more animated direction. The next installment in the sci-fi franchise about robots in disguise will be Transformers One, an animated film set on Cybertron that will explain how Optimus Prime and Megatron went from brothers-in-arms to sworn enemies.

Chris Hemsworth will voice a young Optimus Prime in Transformers One, with Brian Tyree Henry set as the voice of a young Megatron. The voice cast also includes Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, Jon Hamm, and Laurence Fishburne as Autobots Elita, Bumblebee, Sentinel Prime, and Alpha Trion, respectively. Transformers One is scheduled to hit theaters on September 13, 2024.

As for the G.I. Joe franchise, there are reportedly multiple scripts for a new live-action movie in the works at Paramount, although nothing has been officially greenlit yet. The last G.I. Joe movie, the prequel spinoff Snake Eyes, was a box office bomb, grossing only $40 million worldwide back in 2021.

No release dates for Soto’s Transformers movie or Transformers/G.I. Joe have been set at this time.
