Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Director Reveals Future Sequels Have Already Been Mapped Out

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire director Gil Kenan recently shared that he has already discussed where to take the franchise next with producer Jason Reitman.

While speaking with GamesRadar+’s Total Film, Kenan disclosed that he and Reitman have already mapped out the franchise’s future. All that needs to happen now is for audiences to flock to theaters next month to make Frozen Empire a commercial success.

“Jason and I really love Ghostbusters. We love these characters and we would be really happy if audiences were down to keep going on adventures with them,” Kenan said. “If audiences feel this way, then we know what the next stories are going to be.”

Carrie Coon, who portrays the late Egon Spengler’s estranged daughter Callie Spengler in Afterlife and Frozen Empire, also expressed interest in returning for more ghostbusting: “Absolutely! There’s something so thrilling about working on these movies, especially as a woman. We’re not often asked to participate in the adventure or the physical elements of movies like this. We’re often just on the sidelines, so to be thrown into the action has been a real thrill.”

Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is the fourth installment in the original Ghostbusters timeline and the fifth movie overall in the franchise. After co-writing the previous movie, 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, with Reitman, Kenan steps into the director’s chair for Frozen Empire, replacing Reitman, who remains on board the hotly-anticipated sequel as a co-writer and producer. Reitman is the son of Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two Ghostbusters movies.

“In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started — the iconic New York City firehouse — to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age,” reads the official synopsis.

Joining Coon in Frozen Empire are her Afterlife co-stars Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Paul Rudd, Celeste O’Connor, and Logan Kim, reprising their roles as Trevor Spengler, Phoebe Spengler, Gary Grooberson, Lucky Domingo, and Podcast, respectively.

Also back are original Ghostbusters stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and William Atherton as Dr. Peter Venkman, Dr. Ray Stantz, Dr. Winston Zeddmore, Janine Melnitz, and Walter Peck, respectively, while Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, and James Acaster are among the new additions to the franchise.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is set to hit theaters on March 22, 2024.
