Legendary director George Miller reveals how the events of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will be a multiyear epic in contrast to Mad Max: Fury Road and the franchise at large.
“The story is the saga of Furiosa, and how she gets taken from home, and spends the rest of her life trying to get back. [In] Fury Road, the story unfolds over three days and two nights. This film follows the story that runs directly into Fury Road, for 15 years,” Miller said in an interview with Empire hyping up the Mad Mad prequel. “It’s a different animal. It’s got many different locations. It’s an odyssey. No question.”
The upcoming installment in the Mad Max universe will deep dive into wasteland warrior Imperator Furiosa played by Anya Taylor-Joy. Miller conceived the screenplay while developing Fury Road simultaneously and it attracted original Furiosa actor Charlize Theron who the director reveals wanted to make the prequel first. Though Theron did not take part in the prequel’s production, Taylor-Joy confirmed she has the Oscar winner’s support.
“She’s been so classy and kind in letting me go and do it,” Taylor-Joy said. “But I feel very lucky that, from the second I read the script, I just knew this person. I felt so fiercely protective over Furiosa, and fiercely protective of her interests.”
What is Furiosa about?
Set 15 years before the events of 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa stars Anya Taylor-Joy in a tale that sees the future war captain caught in the middle of a battle between two warring tyrants in the Wasteland. The movie co-stars Chris Hemsworth as Warlord Dementus, Tom Burke, Alyla Browne, Nathan Jones, and Angus Simpson. Miller directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Nico Lathouris.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga opens in theaters on May 24.
