Wes Ball Wants Live-Action Legend of Zelda Movie to Be Both ‘Serious’ and ‘Whimsical’

Wes Ball says he wants the upcoming live-action Legend of Zelda movie to be both “serious” and “whimsical.”

Speaking with Total Film Magazine, Ball, who is directing the live-action Legend of Zelda movie for Sony and Nintendo, shared some thoughts on what his vision for the film might encompass.

“I have this awesome idea,” Ball said. “I’ve been thinking about it for a long freakin’ time, of how cool a Zelda movie would be… I want to fulfill people’s greatest desires. I know it’s important, this [Zelda] franchise, to people and I want it to be a serious movie. A real movie that can give people an escape.”

He added, “That’s the thing I want to try to create – it’s got to feel like something real. Something serious and cool, but fun and whimsical.”

What do we know about the Legend of Zelda movie?

Following the success of Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo announced in November 2023 that a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie is in the works.

The movie will be directed by Ball, who is best known for helming the Maze Runner Franchise. Ball also directed Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which releases in United States theaters on May 10, 2024.

Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad are producing the untitled film, which is being co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.

Nintendo previously said in a press release, “By getting deeply involved in the movie production with the aim to put smiles on everyone’s faces through entertainment, Nintendo will continue its efforts to produce unique entertainment and deliver it to as many people as possible.”

Plot details for the movie remain under wraps. No casting announcements have been made at this time.
