Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four continues to round out its cast, with Deadline reporting that Julia Garner has been cast in the film as a version of the Silver Surfer.
According to Deadline’s report, Garner will play a “Shalla-Bal version” of the iconic comic book character. This is in reference to the Marvel Comics character Shalla-Bal, who was the lover of Norrin Radd (the traditional Silver Surfer), and who is a member of a race of aliens known as Zenn-Lavians.
It’s unclear exactly how Garner’s character will become the Silver Surfer. Garner is best known for her role as Ruth Langmore in the hit Netflix crime drama Ozark, for which she won three Primetime Emmy Awards. Garner also starred as Anna Sorokin in the Netflix miniseries Inventing Anna, and will next appear in Blumhouse’s 2025 remake of the Wolf Man.
What do we know about The Fantastic Four?
Garner will join a cast that has already found its main cast of heroes. Pedro Pascal will play Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, while Vanessa Kirby will play Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman. Stranger Things’ Joseph Quinn has the role of Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and The Bear’s Ebon Moss-Bachrach has the part of Ben Grimm/The Thing.
Fantastic Four will be directed by Matt Shakman (WandaVision) from a screenplay by Josh Friedman, who was brought in to re-write the script originally written by Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer. As a project in Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Fantastic Four is scheduled to be released on July 25, 2025.
The Fantastic Four comic debuted in 1961. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, it was the first superhero team title produced by Marvel Comics and popularized famous characters like Reed Richards, Sue Storm and Doctor Doom.
