Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is being turned into a live-action, R-rated movie.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Pictures is now developing a live-action feature film based on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin.
What is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin?
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is a five-issue limited series that launched from IDW Publishing in 2020. Based on a story by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird (creators of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) franchise, the series was written by Eastman and Tom Walts and illustrated by Esau, Escorza, Isaac Escorza, Ben Bishop, and Eastman.
“Who is the Last Ronin?” the synopsis for the comic series reads. “In a future, battle-ravaged New York City, a lone surviving Turtle embarks on a seemingly hopeless mission seeking justice for the family he lost. From legendary TMNT co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, get ready for the final story of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles three decades in the making! What terrible events destroyed his family and left New York a crumbling, post-apocalyptic nightmare? All will be revealed in this climactic Turtle tale that sees longtime friends becoming enemies and new allies emerging in the most unexpected places. Can the surviving Turtle triumph?”
Paramount’s new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is intended to be R-rated, given the story’s dark subject matter.
Tyler Burton Smith (Boy Kills World) is writing the script, while no director has been announced to be attached to the project at this time. Walter Hamada, meanwhile, is producing the movie.
The last Ninja Turtles movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, released in United States theaters in August 2023. A Mutant Mayhem sequel is also in the works and is currently scheduled to be released on October 9, 2026.
A release date has not yet been announced for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin movie.
