Spider-Man 4: Kirsten Dunst Isn’t Sure if We Need Another Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire Sequel

Kirsten Dunst doesn’t think the world necessarily needs a fourth Spider-Man movie with Tobey Maguire.

Speaking with IndieWire, Dunst was asked whether or not she would actually be interested in returning to star in another Spider-Man film.

“Depends,” she answered. “It would depend. I don’t know. Honestly, do we need it?”

Dunst continued, “I don’t think we need that. I don’t know. It was so long ago. I just don’t know how they would, what the story would be. I don’t know. It seems like … I don’t know! It would really depend on the script, and also, I don’t know, you’re really putting yourself out there in a way that … let’s maybe leave things when they were good. You know what I mean?”

Is Spider-Man 4 happening?

Dunst played Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s three Spider-Man films, 2002’s Spider-Man, 2004’s Spider-Man 2, and 2007’s Spider-Man 3.

Following Spider-Man 3, Raimi and Sony had planned to make a fourth film in the franchise together with Maguire and Dunst. While a number of ideas were tossed around for the movie (including having Anne Hathaway play Felicia Hardy and casting John Malkovich as Vulture), the project never came to fruition for a variety of reasons, causing Sony to reboot the franchise with Andrew Garfield.

Maguire then reprised his role as Peter Parker in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which caused some fans to start a campaign attempting to convince Sony to make a fourth Raimi Spider-Man film. While the campaign gained some traction, Raimi recently said he’s not working on any project of that nature at this time.

Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, and Spider-Man 3 are all currently streaming on Disney+. The movies are also returning to theaters this month, starting with the first movie on April 15. Dunst, meanwhile, can be seen in Alex Garland’s new film, Civil War, which is now playing in theaters.
