Edgar Wright is reportedly in talks to direct Sydney Sweeney in the upcoming Barbarella remake.
Per Deadline, Wright is in talks to direct the upcoming remake of Barbarella, which Sweeney has signed on to star in. Jane and Honey Goldman are also in negotiations to write the upcoming film, which likely won’t go into development for some time given Sweeney and Wright’s schedules.
The 1986 version of Barbarella, which is based on Jean-Claude Forest’s French comic series of the same name, was directed by Roger Vadim and starred Jane Fonda as the titular character.
What movies has Edgar Wright made?
Wright has reportedly been eyeing the Barbarella remake, which was originally announced several years ago, for some time. He was also recently tapped to direct a remake of 1987’s The Running Man with Glen Powell, who co-starred in 2023’s Anyone But You alongside Sweeney.
Wright is also known for making 2004’s Shaun of the Dead, 2007’s Hot Fuzz, 2010’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, 2013’s The World’s End, 2017’s Baby Driver, and 2021’s Last Night in Soho, among other titles.
Sweeney, meanwhile, can recently be seen in 2024’s Immaculate, which will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on June 11, 2024. It was also recently announced that Sweeney will play former boxer Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic directed by David Michôd.
Plot details for the new Barbarella remain under wraps at this time. Sweeney recently told Happy Sad Confused’s Josh Horowitz about why she wanted to star in the movie in March 2024, “I mean, Barbarella is just such a fun character to explore. She really just embraces her femininity and her sexuality, and I love that. She uses sex as a weapon and I think it’s such an interesting way into a sci-fi world. I’ve always wanted to do sci-fi. So we’ll see what happens.”
