Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Trailer Previews Fury Road Prequel

George Miller Talks Furiosa’s Future After the Events of Mad Max: Fury Road

In the run-up to Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga‘s release, director George Miller says he would like to see what happens to Wasteland warrior after 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road.

“I’ve often speculated when we see Furiosa go up to the Citadel on that platform at the very end [of Fury Road] and nod goodbye to Max who wanders to the Wasteland,” Miller said in an interview with GamesRadar. “I often think: ‘What does she do, sitting up at the top of the dominant hierarchy? Does she fall into the trap that most revolutionaries do? You know, yesterday’s hero becomes tomorrow’s tyrant, which is classic in storytelling.'”

Furiosa was played previously by Charlize Theron in Fury Road while her younger counterpart is played by Anya Taylor-Joy in the upcoming prequel. Miller previously revealed the two stars have identical backgrounds in dance which was the motivating factor in having Taylor-Joy step into Theron’s shoes.

“I learned that she was somebody who is very, very disciplined, and she’s very young,” Miller said. “She was a ballet dancer, Charlize was a ballet dancer. I worked on Happy Feet with a lot of brilliant dancers, and I understand the physical discipline, as well as the emotional discipline they have. So, all of that led to Anya being Furiosa.”

While a third Furiosa project has not been announced by Warner Bros., Miller says he’s in early development on a new Mad Max prequel story based on an outline he wrote about the character’s history during Fury Road’s production. “Well, we are certainly working on it. And as I say, we wrote that basically as a novella, and now we’ve got a chance, we will get that into a screenplay form, and then we’ll take it from there.”

What is Furiosa about?

Set 15 years before the events of Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa stars Anya Taylor-Joy in a tale that sees the future war captain caught in the middle of a battle between two warring tyrants in the Wasteland. The movie stars Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth alongside Tom Burke, Alyla Browne, Nathan Jones, and Angus Simpson. Miller directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Nico Lathouris.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga opens in theaters on May 24.
