Joker: Folie à Deux star Lady Gaga says she’s adding a personal touch to her take on Harley Quinn in the upcoming DC sequel.
“You know my version of Harley is mine, and it’s very authentic to this movie and these characters,” Gaga said to Access Hollywood while promoting the Gaga Chomatica Ball film. “I’ve never done anything like I’ve done in this movie before, so it’s all going to be completely brand new and really fun.”
Gaga is the second big-screen iteration of Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn after Margot Robbie‘s take in the DCEU installments Suicide Squad in 2016, Birds of Prey in 2020, and The Suicide Squad in 2021. While Robbie’s future as the character remains uncertain under James Gunn’s DCU, the Barbie star complimented Gaga during the 2024 Golden Globes.
“She’s going to crush it! She’s going to be amazing,” Robbie said. “I actually haven’t spoken to her about it. I almost don’t want to know so I can save it for a surprise when I see the movie.”
What is Joker: Folie à Deux about?
Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker: Folie à Deux is the sequel to 2019’s Joker starring Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix. While details about Joker: Folie à Deux’s plot remain under wraps, it is expected to continue from the previous installment’s conclusion with Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) incarcerated at Arkham Asylum and crossing paths with psychiatrist-turned-girlfriend Harley Quinn (Gaga). Taking the direction of a jukebox musical, Phillips says he was inspired to cast Gaga in the sequel on the strength of her performance in A Star is Born.
“We cast Gaga because she’s magic,” Phillips said. “I was a producer on A Star Is Born . . . That was the first time I really met her and got to watch her work. As we were writing this script, Scott [Silver], who I wrote it with, kept going back to her.”
Joker: Folie á Deux is scheduled for release on October 4th.
