Star Wars’ Dave Filoni Gives Update on His New Republic Movie

Dave Filoni has offered an update about his upcoming New Republic Star Wars movie.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, via ComicBook, Filoni shared an update about the Star Wars movie he’s currently working on along with Ahsoka Season 2.

What did Dave Filoni say about his Star Wars New Republic movie?

“Because I’ve been writing [Ahsoka Season 2], things have clicked and I have a much better idea about where things are going to go,” Filoni said. “I will say, I have an opening I really like quite a bit, I’m very excited about it for that picture. I’m excited about the potential of just doing it … Right now, my focus is clearly on [Ahsoka] as well as the rest of the galaxy and how it’s spinning.”

In April 2023, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023 that Filoni was working on a new, untitled Star Wars film.

Plot details remain largely under wraps; however, it’s known that the movie will be set during the New Republic (between the events of Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens) and will close out the interconnected stories told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka, among other Star Wars Disney+ series.

“The way I look at it, there are [small] stories, and then there’s the big story of the day, too,” Filoni told Empire Magazine about the project in May 2023. “A New Hope, Empire, and Return Of The Jedi tell the important parts of the tale that really define the history of the period. There are all kinds of sub-stories underneath that. We’ve been building all these small stories.”

Filoni’s New Republic Star Wars movie does not yet have an official release date from Lucasfilm. The next theatrically released Star Wars movie will be The Mandalorian & Grogue, which arrives on May 22, 2026.
