Ryan Reynolds says his “weirdest” pitch for Deadpool 3 was “a $5 or $6 million budget with no special effects.”
Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine releases in United States theaters on July 26, 2024. The film, directed by Shawn Levy, sees Reynolds reprise his role as the Merc With a Mouth alongside Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.
The road to Deadpool & Wolverine has been a long one as, while speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Reynolds reflected on some of the initial ideas he had for a third Deadpool movie.
What was Ryan Reynolds’ “weirdest” Deadpool 3 pitch?
Along with a pitch that was “a Rashomon story that had these three different points of view,” Reynolds said he had an idea for a low-budget, indie-style version for another Deadpool outing.
“Literally, it was a $5 or $6 million budget with no special effects,” he said. “It was just a talkie-talkie road trip with me and [Karan Soni’s character] Dopinder and some of the things we collected and saw along the way. It wasn’t meant to be an event movie. If we’re on our way to Point C, it was meant to just get us to Point B. That was the weirdest one. I liked it. I thought it was kind of fun.”
Reynolds has discussed these visions for Deadpool 3 before. Speaking with Empire Magazine in May 2024, Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige said he rejected the idea of a Rashomon Deadpool story as he wasn’t ready for the character to make his MCU debut yet.
The truth is, I wasn’t even sure how to incorporate Deadpool yet. I was very much thinking about how to bring mutants and the X-Men into [the MCU], and I thought it needed to be more than just playing the hits,” said Feige. “But the truth is, Ryan is an idea machine. So he may have pitched that to me, but he also pitched 25 other thoughts and ideas.”
