Comic-Con Exclusive: Will There be Star Trek 2 Footage at Comic-Con?

1. Why isn’t the movie at Comic-Con in San Diego where J.J. Abrams first announced the cast for his 2008 reboot?

Paramount Pictures decided to bow out of Comic-Con this year even though you couldn’t get a bigger audience of “Star Trek” fans than right here in San Diego this week. Many people wondered why that was the case and co-writer co-producer Alex Kurtzman simply brushed it off as the creators biding their time.

2. Is Gary Mitchell going to be the villain in the movie?

This one really took off last week when Karl Urban told an SFX reporter that Benedict Cumberbatch would be playing Gary Mitchell, something that’s discussed and analyzed here.

Speaking with actor Karl Urban earlier today–he’s in San Diego to show off his new movie Dredd 3D, which you can read about here–we had to ask him about the controversy surrounding his “Gary Mitchell slip-up,” and this was his reply:

“I’m really not at liberty to discuss anything about Star Trek. All I can say is that I did that interview after a 22-hour flight from New Zealand. I literally hopped off the plane into the interview.”

Now, Urban is actually one of our favorite actors here at ComingSoon.net, not just because he appears in a lot of cool action, science fiction and fantasy movies, but also because he once told us that he likes ComingSoon.net (which is awesome), but more importantly, he’s an extremely earnest guy and not one who would just casually say something about a fellow actor or character as a joke to screw with journalists or fans.

What’s interesting is that after we moved onto other topics, particularly his return to working with his buddy Bruce Willis in the upcoming action sequel RED 2–which as far as we know, it hadn’t even been announced that his character was returning yet–he out of the blue dropped this huge bombshell:

“I can promise you that before the end of Comic-Con, some exclusive Star Trek footage, it’s going to come out. You’re going to find it. It’s going to come out.”

Look for our full video interview with Urban shortly–besides talking about Dredd, he says some nice things about his RED co-star Ernest Borgnine– but if you’re in San DIego at Comic-Con, make sure you show up to the Masters of the Web panel at 4:30 p.m. in Room 24ABC where Karl Urban will be guest-hosting to see if Urban has anything more to say about the above. We can only hope he’ll bring the Star Trek footage with him to the panel on his iPhone.

UPDATE: At the Masters of the Web panel, Karl Urban elaborated that there would be ‘secret’ footage from Star Trek 2 on YouTube, so this may be a viral thing.
