“It’s based on a comic book,” said the director. “I didn’t know (that) when it was presented to me. It’s kind of a pulpy thriller with a comic element to it. It doesn’t take itself too seriously but it’s not broad and stupid. It’s probably closer to 48 Hours than Bad Boys. Denzel (Washington) plays a DEA undercover and Mark (Wahlberg) plays a Navy Seal undercover and they don’t know, and they plan a bank robbery together.”
The original comic book features quite a bit of violence and it doesn’t seem like that’s changed for the film, as Kormákur says the final film may be rated ‘R’. “On my contract it says ‘R’. I’ll only do an ‘R’ if it makes the movie better. If it comes to a place where it doesn’t really matter and you have to take out one F-word’ or something, that’s fine, it doesn’t matter. But I’m not going to slice it down to make it soft.
2 Guns will be a little different from his previous film with Mark Wahlberg (Contraband) in terms of execution. “It relies less on action. I don’t mind doing action but I’m more interested in character based work. There’s some good action in it but it doesn’t go to the extreme in the action. Hopefully there’s more fun in the action and not necessarily big explosions.”
Kormákur revealed that he’s in the process of editing the Director’s Cut now. “It’s just about two hours right now. It came in at like two hours and twenty five minutes and just by trimming….it’s probably like two hours and ten minutes right now.”
With editing almost complete, the production is currently seeking out someone to score the film. “Clinton Shorter, maybe this is too early to reveal, but we’re in negotiations with him. He did Contraband and he did District 9 as well.”
