Has J.J. Abrams Cast Simon Pegg in Star Wars: Episode VII?

At some point during the madness of the San Diego Comic-Con, Benedict Cumberbatch made a comment about not being cast for the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII but alluded to the fact that perhaps Simon Pegg would appear in the highly-anticipated sequel. Speaking with Vulture, Pegg was asked about this and seemed to say he’s not involved, at least not in any form we would recognize him.

“Well, J.J. uses me in different roles, and we’re good friends. I feel like my face in Star Wars would pop people out of the movie. Look, I love Star Wars, and I don’t want people to watch and go, ‘Oh, there’s Simon Pegg’s face.’ The film is cleverly cast with these amazing, unknown actors.”

When asked outright if he wasn’t in the film, he replied with a smile and said:

“Of course I visited the set. It’s amazing, and I love Star Wars. I want to see everything happening. It looks wonderful, and you need to believe those characters. Any type of stunt casting might just pop you out of the movie.”

Pegg has been a noted fan of “Star Wars” going all the way back to his short-lived Channel 4 series “Spaced” which he co-created with Jessica Stevenson just after the release of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, which was integral to the plot of many of the show’s episodes. He also provided a voice for the “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” animated series as well as the “Phineas and Ferb: Star Wars special.” He recreated a sequence from the original “Star Wars” for College Humor back in 2011 as well.

With all of these connections to “Star Wars” and his friend J.J. Abrams (with whom he has worked with on both “Star Trek” and “Mission: Impossible” films) directing the film, it would seem highly unlikely that Pegg won’t appear in the film in some capacity; however, we may not know until opening day.

Star Wars: Episode VII is currently set to debut in theaters on December 18, 2015.
