Gwenpool to star in her own holiday one shot!
Almost exactly one year ago, Marvel Comics published Edge of Spider-Verse #2, the second in a series of one-off stories about different iterations of Spider-Man characters. What made this story special, though, was it introduced the world to Spider-Gwen, an alternate version of the doomed Gwen Stacy who was bitten by the radioactive spider and given great power and responsibility instead of Peter Parker.
The character took the comic book world by storm, becoming a fan-favorite cosplay character, and eventually spawning her own self-titled comic book series. Even later this year when the Marvel Universe is “remade” into the All-New, All-Different Marvel, Spider-Gwen will get to keep her own alternate universe populated with bizarre versions of Frank Castle, Matt Murdock, and others.
Since the character debuted, there have been a number of playful jabs at the popularity of the character within Marvel’s own ranks, including the Gwoot (Gwen Stacy and Groot) variant cover and a Deadpool/Gwen Stacy mash up, Gwenpool, as a variant for Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars #2 (pictured above). Now however, Marvel has taken it another step further, announcing a one-shot issue for later this year, Gwenpool’s Special #1. Your eyes do not deceive you.
Not only will Gwenpool be getting her own comic later this year, the character will have three back-up stories in the pages of Howard the Duck #1-3, which will hit stands just before the holiday special. You can check out the cover art and solicitations for the releases below.
