Rick Moranis Turned Down a Cameo in Ghostbusters Reboot

Fan-favorite Rick Moranis reveals in rare interview he turned down a cameo in the Ghostbusters reboot

We already know that original cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver are set to cameo in some capacity in Sony’s upcoming Ghostbusters reboot, but there is one notably absent cast member, the elusive Rick Moranis. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Moranis revealed that he was offered a cameo in the film but turned it down.

“I wish them well. I hope it’s terrific. But it just makes no sense to me. Why would I do just one day of shooting on something I did 30 years ago?”

Moranis went on to confirm that despite rumblings that he’s completely retired from film and television work, if the right project came along he would do it.

“I took a break, which turned into a longer break,” he tells the outlet. “But I’m interested in anything that I would find interesting. I still get the occasional query about a film or television role and as soon as one comes along that piques my interest, I’ll probably do it. [But Ghostbusters] didn’t appeal to me.”

Ghostbusters stars Kristen Wiig as Erin Gilbert, Kate McKinnon as Jillian Holtzman, Melissa McCarthy as Abby Yates and Leslie Jones as Patty Tolan. The film is also set feature Chris Hemsworth as the new secretary, Andy Garcia as the Mayor of New York City, Michael K. Williams as a character named “Hawkins,” Matt Walsh as a character named “Rourke,” and Neil Casey as the film’s villain. New York City’s NY1 news anchor Pat Kiernan is also set to appear as news anchor in the film.

“I’m having a lot of fun playing with genres,” Feig told ComingSoon.net of the new film earlier this year, “…I love the original film, but I also just love the idea of busting ghosts and kind of paranormal warriors. I thought, ‘You know, if I could do this with the funny women I know and kind of just do a new origin story…’ I’m more interested in what would happen today. You know, you see things on TV about ghosts, but none of it’s real. What if, suddenly, something started happening? What happens when that just begins to happen to people? Also, how do they develop their technology? It’s not as fun if they’re just handed their proton packs. It’s why it’s not as fun to do a sequel. The fun is getting there.”

Directed by Feig from a script he co-wrote with Katie Dippold, Sony Pictures will release Ghostbusters in theaters on July 15, 2016.
