Exclusive: Jai Courtney Talks Doing Mushrooms for Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad star Jai Courtney wants to clear something up about reports that he got high on psychedelics to talk with director David Ayer on Skype as a form of Method acting for his Captain Boomerang character. The Australian action star says it simply didn’t happen.

Jai Courtney claimed the story had been misconstrued in the press, who took his quotes somewhat out of context.

“The thing is, why would I take magic mushrooms and get on a phone call with David Ayer? Obviously that’s not the case,” he explained when we asked if he wanted to set the record straight. “All I was saying is that I happened at one point to have taken mushrooms, and I was doing a little thinking about my character, and just investigating stuff a little further.”

The Divergent actor seemed to have had a good sense of humor about the situation, though, adding: “David under no circumstances told me to digest, or ingest anything for that matter. That’s not his style at all.”

Though he told SuperHeroHype back in 2014 that “it’s gonna be a while before I get roped into another franchise,” Jai Courtney told us the reason joined up with Suicide Squad after such a pronouncement: “Very simple: David Ayer. There was no question, it was an absolute no-brainer… I didn’t care if plans were otherwise earlier. It was just about not losing the opportunity to work with him.”

He called working on Suicide Squad under Ayer’s direction “a wonderful experience” that “exceeded expectations” for the actor. When we asked if he’d work with Ayer on a Suicide Squad sequel, Jai Courtney answered unequivocally: “Oh f**k yeah, of course!”

Suicide Squad also stars Oscar nominee Will Smith (Ali, The Pursuit of Happyness), Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, Focus), Joel Kinnaman (Netflix‘s House of Cards), Oscar nominee Viola Davis (The Help, Doubt), Jay Hernandez (Takers), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Thor: The Dark World), Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors), Scott Eastwood (Fury), Cara Delevingne (Paper Towns), Adam Beach (Cowboys & Aliens), and Karen Fukuhara in her feature film debut. It is produced by Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, with Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.

Suicide Squad opens in 3D, and in 2D, and in select IMAX 3D theaters on August 5, 2016.
