4 Game of Thrones Spin-Offs in Development at HBO

After the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones airs, HBO does not want to simply leave the world of Westeros behind. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the cable giant is in development on FOUR (4!) potential Game of Thrones spin-offs with four different writers as well as creator George R.R. Martin. Current showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff will serve as executive producers on any of the four that HBO decides to greenlight.

Here are the four teams:

Max Borenstein – Borenstein created and served as showrunner on Fox’s Minority Report series, and wrote the screenplays for 2014’s Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island and the upcoming Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Jane Goldman and George R. R. Martin – Goldman’s credits include the Matthew Vaughn collaborations Stardust, Kick-Ass, X-Men: First ClassKingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle, as well as Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past and Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

Brian Helgeland – This Oscar-winning screenwriter of L.A. Confidential wrote and directed A Knight’s Tale, Payback42 and 2015’s Legend, and also penned Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood, Tony Scott’s The Taking of Pelham 123 and Man on Fire, as well as Blood Work and Mystic River for Clint Eastwood.

Carly Wray and George R. R. Martin – Wray’s TV credits include Mad Men, The Bastard Executioner, Constantine and HBO’s The Leftovers.

There is no word on whether these four potential projects are direct spin-offs with characters from the show, prequels, or sequels. ComingSoon.net will keep you posted as the new show (or shows!) evolve once the scripts are turned in and decisions are made.

Game of Thrones returns for a shorter seventh season on July 16, 2017.

At the end of last season, Daenerys’ (Emilia Clarke) dragons and her immense army were finally on the way to Westeros, where Cersei (Lena Headey) has now become Queen after the death of her children. The Night King’s (Vladimir Furdik in season 6) army is heading south, and a battle appears to be imminent.

Though we don’t know exactly what’s coming, Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark, tweeted this last year: “Just finished reading season 7, s**t gets REAL. I’d start preparing yourselves now… scratch that, nothing will prepare you for this… Holy BALLS.”

The show is based on the novel series “A Song of Ice and Fire” by George R.R. Martin. Last season, however, the TV series moved past the point where the books have stalled.
