Lionsgate is moving forward with their Highlander reboot with a script from Colony writer Ryan Condal, according to Deadline. The film is set to begin pre-production later this year. The Highlander reboot has been in development since 2008 when Summit Entertainment got the rights.

Highlander was released in 1986 and stars Christopher Lambert (Mortal Kombat) and Sean Connery (The Rock). It is the story of a Scottish man who is immortal unless he’s beheaded. Those who are immortal hunt each other down because “there can be only one.” There were five sequels to the film, two live-action television series and three animated series, as well as books and comics based on the franchise. The original film’s soundtrack was done by the band Queen.

Highlander will be directed by Chad Stahelski (John Wick) after he finishes John Wick 3, and produced by Neal H. Moritz. Ryan Condal is the co-creator, executive producer and showrunner of Colony on USA, which is airing its third season. He’s also developing a drama series around Conan the Barbarian for Amazon Studios with director Miguel Sapochnik (Game of Thrones) and executive producer Warren Littlefield (The Handmaid’s Tale).

“We’ve finally got a screenplay we’re happy with,” Patrick Wachsberger, Head of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group told the site. “We have set up the story so it has sequel potential.” They also report that the studio is planning a Highlander trilogy.
