Shazam! May Strike With $45 Million Opening Weekend

Captain Marvel has shown that superhero films can deliver summer-sized box office during the spring. That may be good news for Shazam!, which is set to open in just a few weeks. Early box office estimates indicate that it has the potential to be a modest hit for DC. However, it may not match the success of Aquaman or Wonder Woman.

According to Deadline, early estimates show that Shazam! could earn $40 to $45 million during its opening weekend. By comparison, Jordan Peele’s Us may make $40 million or more in its opening next week. Disney’s Dumbo should follow closely behind with around $58 to $75 million when it opens March 29.

That opening estimate is far from disappointing, but it does seem small compared to other superhero films. Captain Marvel arrived last week with $153 million, and it has made over $500 million worldwide. Aquaman scored a massive hit back in December with $67 million opening weekend. Before that, Wonder Woman left her mark with $103 million start out of the gate.

Shazam! will also face competition when Lionsgate’s Hellboy arrives a week later. Of course, Avengers: Endgame is likely to crush all comers when it arrives on April 26.

Early reactions to Shazam! have been glowing, which could indicate that it will outperform its tracking numbers. Early Fandango screenings may provide a little boost before the film opens as well.

Shazam! will take flight in theaters on April 5. Do you think it will open higher than $45 million? Let us know in the comment section below!
