Returning to Westeros felt like coming back home for Game of Thrones director David Nutter. Seven years have passed since he directed his first episode in the series. Recently, speaking with Deadline, the director emphasized the most important parts of Game of Throne‘s last season for him. Not the battles or deaths, but the little moments.
“One of the things that was important, especially with both of the first two episodes leading into the fourth episode, was the fact that there are these big-picture things that you’re going after as far as storytelling is concerned. But the second thing is the fact that there are little moments between the characters that are silent moments, that are information or non-information, that are emotionally telling, that are connective tissue-type things that actually really brought the characters closer together, there’s wonderful moments with Arya and the Hound, Arya and Jon Snow, Sansa and Tyrion.”

“The Last of the Starks” was the last episode that Nutter directed in the HBO’s epic drama series. In 2015, he received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for his “Mother’s Mercy” episode.
Game of Thrones episode 8.05 airs Sunday, May 12.
