For more than 20 years, James Cameron was the man behind the highest-grossing film of all time. He first achieved this distinction with Titanic in 1997. That film’s record wasn’t broken until his next movie, Avatar, arrived in 2009. Now that Avengers: Endgame managed to outperform both films, Marvel Studios wears the box office crown. However, Cameron isn’t losing any sleep over this. In fact, he’s quite relieved according to his recent interview with Deadline.
“It gives me a lot of hope,” said Cameron. “Avengers: Endgame is demonstrable proof that people will still go to movie theaters. The thing that scared me most about making Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 was that the market might have shifted so much that it simply was no longer possible to get people that excited about going and sitting in a dark room with a bunch of strangers to watch something.”

In the mid-’90s, Cameron was planning to make his own Spider-Man movie. He even wrote a 50-page treatment for it. However, as recently as 2018, Cameron revealed his distaste for the abundance of superhero films that dominate the big screen. Shortly before Avengers: Infinity War debuted, Cameron told IndieWire that he hoped “we’ll start getting Avenger fatigue here pretty soon.” His reasoning behind this was that there are “other stories to tell” within the sci-fi genre. But as Endgame’s box office tally demonstrates, superhero fatigue isn’t setting in just yet.
