Jade Bartlett Will Write Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

In addition to having the longest title in MCU history, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will also reportedly be the franchise’s first scary movie. So it makes sense that Marvel would bring on a writer who knows her way around the horror genre to help out with the script. According to Collider, the studio has just tapped Jade Bartlett to write the upcoming sequel.

Bartlett first made waves in the industry after she wrote Miller’s Girl. That script earned a spot on the 2016 Black List of Hollywood’s best unproduced screenplays. Miller’s Girl was eventually optioned by Good Universe for Bartlett to direct herself. In 2017, Universal hired her to write Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know, based on the novel by Chloé Esposito. Most recently, Bartlett wrote the latest draft of The Turning, a new horror movie starring Mackenzie Davis and Finn Wolfhard. That film opens on January 24.

Because she’s dabbled in horror, she should get along nicely with director Scott Derrickson, who was known for helming films like The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Sinister before directing the original Doctor Strange in 2016. Derrickson was confirmed to be returning to the director’s chair for the sequel late last year. He was also onstage at Comic-Con this summer to announce the movie’s title during Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation.

Benedict Cumberbatch will also return as Doctor Stephen Strange. So far, the supporting cast includes Benedict Wong as Wong and Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. Apparently, the events of Olsen and Paul Bettany’s WandaVision series will set up the film’s plot.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will arrive in theaters on May 7, 2021.
