Accident on Batwoman Set Leaves Production Assistant Paralyzed

Production on The CW’s Batwoman is currently suspended due to fears over the COVID-19 outbreak. But apparently, the series experienced a more personal tragedy two days before filming shut down. Deadline is reporting that production assistant Amanda Smith suffered serious injuries on the show’s set. Tragically, the accident has left her paralyzed from the waist down.

The incident took place on March 11. According to Deadline’s report, Smith was preparing for a scene underneath the Georgia Viaduct in Vancouver when a boom lift bucket “lowered onto her head” and resulted in several spinal injuries. A GoFundMe set up in her name notes that Smith underwent emergency surgery after the accident. However, “there is no way to know if it was successful until she undergoes significant therapy.” The page’s creators say she might regain feeling in her legs with enough time and rehabilitation. So far, they’ve raised more than $56,000 of their $100,000 goal.

Following Smith’s injuries, the Workers’ Compensation Board of British Columbia (WorkSafeBC) is opening an inquiry into the accident. Warner Bros. Television has just released a statement confirming that they’ll be cooperating with the investigation. You can read it for yourself below.

“Our thoughts are with [Smith] for a speedy recovery. We are working closely with WorkSafeBC to provide any and all requested information. We continue to work to protect the health and safety of all our crews, casts and employees.”
