Despite facing a lot of setbacks before its long-awaited theatrical release, director Josh Boone still feels very optimistic about the future of The New Mutants. Especially after Disney gave him the opportunity to release the intended cut that he wanted for the film without the reshoots that Fox previously ordered. In a recent interview with SFX Magazine (via Comic Book), Boone sounds hopeful that the studio would allow him to finish his planned trilogy for The New Mutants if ever it becomes a hit at the box office. Originally set for release on April 3, the film now eyes a brand new theatrical release date on August 28, 2020. Over two years since its initial 2018 scheduled date.
“Ultimately, after all this time, I was able to make MY New Mutants film, and I am proud of it,” The Fault in Our Stars director said. “What I’m hoping for now is that it will be successful enough so the studio will allow me to complete a trilogy. I’ve got it all planned out.”

The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy (Split, The Witch) as Magik and Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones, gen:LOCK) as Wolfsbane, with Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Dani Moonstar, and Stranger Things’ Charlie Heaton as Cannonball.
The New Mutants adapts the monthly comic book series of the same name that launched in 1982. Created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, The New Mutants follows on a group of teenage mutants as heroes in training in the Marvel Universe. The feature, expected to be a departure from the sci-fi-action spectacle of other X-Men films, aspires to a “Stephen King meets John Hughes”-style horror movie tone.
