Sam Raimi Reacts To Seeing Doc Ock Again

It must be a good time to be Sam Raimi. He’s about to make his return to the Marvel Universe as the director of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. But beyond this, his influence is all over the next entry in Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man saga, with Alfred Molina reprising his iconic role as Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man: No Way Home later this year. Molina’s appearance in the sequel’s trailer likely played a major role in its record-breaking view count last month. And just like other Marvel fans, Raimi was thrilled to see his character show up onscreen for the first time since Spider-Man 2 premiered in 2004.

Raimi shared his thoughts on Molina’s return during a recent interview with SYFY Wire. Overall, he sounds excited to watch the famous supervillain re-enter Peter Parker’s life. But he also observed that the new film is relying less on practical effects this time.

“That was beautiful,” said Raimi. “He looks great, the animation’s great. I’m assuming it’s not puppeted because when we did Doc Ock, we had puppets and animation for his octopus tentacles. But it was smooth and powerful and I loved his costume they kept [from the original]. I think it’s gonna be a great movie.”

This isn’t the first time an actor from Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy has reprised his role in the MCU. J.K. Simmons memorably returned to play J. Jonah Jameson for a mid-credits scene in Spider-Man: Far From Home. The trailer for No Way Home also hinted at an appearance by Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn/Green Goblin. Unfortunately, we’re still going to have to wait a while before we learn if Raimi’s original leading man, Tobey Maguire, is coming back to play an alternate version of Peter Parker.

Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters on December 17.
