Nearly three years ago, Netflix picked up the rights to adapt DC’s groundbreaking fantasy comic, The Sandman, with series creator Neil Gaimen attached as an executive producer and one of the leading creative voices behind the show. Today, during the Geeked Week festivities, Netflix debuted a new trailer ahead of the series premiere this summer. But before we run the video, Netflix’s description for the show offers some much needed context for what you’re about to see: Morpheus escapes.
“There is another world that waits for all of us when we close our eyes and sleep — a place called the Dreaming, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will change both the dreaming and waking worlds forever. To restore order, Dream must journey across different worlds and timelines to mend the mistakes he’s made during his vast existence, revisiting old friends and foes, and meeting new entities — both cosmic and human — along the way.”

Another important thing to know is that Morpheus/Dream is one of the Endless. They are the physical embodiment of some of the universe’s most formidable aspects. They also consider themselves to be siblings. In this first season, we’ll meet Morpheus’ sisters, Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) and Despair (Donna Preston). The other sibling to be introduced this season is Desire (Mason Alexander Park), but they can’t be tied down to a single gender. And unlike the others, Desire can’t wait to find new ways to make trouble for Morpheus.
The Sandman will premiere on Netflix on Friday, August 5.
