George Miller Talks Mad Max Franchise’s Future After Furiosa

Furiosa director George Miller has revealed his plans to develop another project exploring Mad Max‘s backstory. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Miller shared how an outline of Max’s history created during the production of 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road will be the basis for a future project set in the Wasteland.

“In doing what we did in the preparation of Mad Max: Fury Road, we also wrote what happened to Max in the year before we encounter him in [that film],” Miller said. “And as we get towards the end of [Furiosa], the chronology, basically, we had to see that Mad Max was lurking around somewhere because we do know what happened. The writers know what happened to Mad Max in that year before, and we have a whole story of that, which I would like to do sometime if I get the chance.”

Miller continued by clarifying the status of the Mad Max prequel. “Well, we are certainly working on it. And as I say, we wrote that basically as a novella, and now we’ve got a chance, we will get that into a screenplay form, and then we’ll take it from there.”

What remains unclear about Miller’s Mad Max prequel idea is how connected or disconnected it will be from the original three Mad Max installments starring Mel Gibson. The franchise began with 1979’s Mad Max where the titular hero began as a police officer hellbent on avenging his murdered family against a motorcycle gang. 1981’s The Road Warrior (aka Mad Max 2) saw Max defend Wasteland settlers against fuel-seeking marauders and 1985’s Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome saw Max lead a tribe of Wasteland children to freedom. Gibson was eventually replaced by the younger Tom Hardy in Fury Road.

What is Furiosa about?

Set 15 years before the events of Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa stars Anya Taylor-Joy in a tale that sees the future war captain caught in the middle of a battle between two warring tyrants in the Wasteland. The movie stars Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth alongside Tom Burke, Alyla Browne, Nathan Jones, and Angus Simpson. Miller directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Nico Lathouris.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga opens in theaters on May 24.
