Creature Commandos: First Plot Details Revealed by James Gunn

DC Studios head James Gunn has shared the first plot details for Creature Commandos, revealing that the animated series is a direct continuation of Peacemaker.

During Creature Commandos’ Annecy Animation Festival panel (via The Hollywood Reporter), Gunn made an appearance, via a video message from the set of Superman, to reveal how Peacemaker Season 1 and Creature Commandos are connected.

What Creature Commandos plot details did James Gunn share?

“The new series picks up directly after our Peacemaker season one finale, which leaves Waller with her hands tied operationally, meaning that she’s no longer able to get away with putting human lives on the line to carry out her clandestine morally questionable missions,” the filmmaker shared. “Instead, she recruits a ragtag band of misfits, not unlike the Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.”

The only difference is that the Creature Commandos roster is made up of “actual literal monsters, and I can’t wait for you to meet them. Creating this series has been one of the absolute joys of my life,” continued Gunn.

Creature Commandos was one of the first projects announced by Gunn during his January 2023 slate reveal of the DC Universe. The adult animated series is based on the titular team of military superhumans and monsters who were first introduced by DC Comics in 1980’s Weird War Tales #93 by writer J. M. DeMatteis and artist Pat Broderick. The first season will consist of seven episodes.

Frank Grillo and Viola Davis headline Creature Commandos as Rick Flag Sr. and Amanda Waller, respectively. The rest of the all-star voice cast includes Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot and Weasel, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma as the Bride of Frankenstein, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, Anya Chalotra as Circe, and Steve Agee as John Economos.

Creature Commandos will premiere on Max in December 2024.
