Kit Harington became a household name following his outing as Jon Snow in Game of Thrones. His fame only increased after he appeared as Dane Whitman in the 2021 Marvel film Eternals. And now, with Harington returning to HBO in the third season of the acclaimed series Industry, the above-mentioned projects and related works are once again in pop-culture conversations. In a recent interview, Harington admitted that he couldn’t “pretend” that his MCU role was interesting.
Kit Harington reveals the real reason he joined MCU’s Eternals
Harington candidly voiced his thoughts on his character in Eternals and explained the real reason why he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Eternals was directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao and featured a cast that includes Angelina Jolie and Harington’s fellow Game of Thrones alum, Richard Madden.
In an extensive conversation with GQ, Harington implied that even though he didn’t think his character was different or interesting, he did Eternals because it was a Marvel movie. “I’m not gonna pretend I took that [role] because it was different and interesting. If Marvel calls, you gotta do it,” he said.
When will Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman return as Black Knight in MCU?
Marvel seemingly had plans for Harington’s Dane Whitman, as Eternals set up his potential transformation into the superhero Black Knight. The film even has a post-credits scene in which an unseen individual (an uncredited voice-only cameo by Mahershala Ali as Blade) asks Whitman if he is prepared to use the Ebony Blade, a magical sword generally associated with Black Knight.
However, Eternals was a critical and box-office disappointment. In July 2024, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, told Inverse, that there weren’t any immediate plans for a sequel to Eternals. This makes Harington’s future in the MCU quite uncertain. He could potentially appear in the MCU Blade film, slated to come out on November 7, 2025. But, that project also has experienced a considerable number of issues, with Yann Demange being the latest director to leave the film.
Alternatively, Harington can appear in a Black Knight special presentation since Kevin Feige has confirmed one of those to be in development. If not that, then he could have his own Disney Plus series, or perhaps a cameo appearance in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars.
