New Star Trek: Discovery Featurette Teases New Characters in Season 2

In anticipation of Star Trek: Discovery’s sophomore season, the official Star Trek YouTube channel has released a new behind-the-scenes video. The clip features new footage from the upcoming season as well as interviews with cast members and producers. We’re also granted new insight into what the Discovery’s crew will face when they resume their cosmic travels in 2019.

New showrunner Alex Kurtzman, a veteran of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek movies, emphasized his desire for the series to match the films’ scope. “We have made lots and lots of choices in season 2 to shift to a much more cinematic look,” said Kurtzman. “At the same time, we have done everything we can to protect what is small and intimate, which is the relationships between the characters.” Judging by earlier previews, the arrival of new characters is going to put strain on these relationships.

“For season 2, the first thing you see is us coming in contact with the Enterprise,” said Sonequa Martin-Green, who returns as Michael Burnham. The arrival of the famous Starfleet vessel brings with it the entrance of Captain Christopher Pike. Anson Mount is playing Pike this time around. Much to the chagrin of its crew, he’ll be assuming command of the Discovery. “Speaking as a fan, we’ve always wanted to know more about Pike,” said Mount of his character. “It’s such a mysterious history.”

Of course, one of the biggest sources of Trekkie excitement this year is Ethan Peck’s Spock. According to executive producer Olatunde Osunsanmi, this version of the beloved Vulcan “is going through things that we never knew Spock went through.”

Star Trek: Discovery’s second season will premiere on January 17 via CBS All Access. You can check out the new featurette below. Are you excited for new iterations of familiar characters make their debut on the show? Tell us what you think in the comment section!
