Ludwig Göransson is leaving Wakanda and heading to a galaxy far, far away. StarWars.com has announced that the Black Panther composer will provide the musical score for The Mandalorian.
“Words fail to express how surreal and humbling it feels to be invited into the Star Wars universe,” said Göransson. “I am deeply grateful to Jon Favreau and Disney for this opportunity and to John Williams for raising the bar so high with his iconic, intrepid scores — they will never be matched. In these next months I hope to honor the tradition of Star Wars’ musical landscape while propelling The Mandalorian into new and unchartered territory. And I will try to remember that there is no try.”

Ryan Coogler tapped Göransson to compose Black Panther‘s music after previously collaborating with him on Fruitvale Station and Creed. Göransson’s critically acclaimed work on the film earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Score. He also secured a Grammy nod for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media. To prepare for the film, Göransson visited Africa and researched musical styles spanning the entire continent. It’s safe to assume he won’t be visiting outer space to give The Mandalorian a similarly authentic sound, but there’s no denying that Göransson has big shoes to fill.
Apart from Black Panther, Göransson scored another Marvel character’s cinematic outing with this year’s Venom. In addition to his film credentials, he is also an accomplished producer. He has frequently teamed up with Childish Gambino, and his production efforts on the rapper’s “Awaken, My Love!” album landed him additional Grammy nominations. Göransson has also produced records for Chance the Rapper and Haim.
