Now that Game of Thrones’ watch has ended, the cast and crew members are looking around for new projects to fill their schedules. Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are already expected to start work on their new Star Wars trilogy later this year. However, writer and producer Bryan Cogman has his sights set on another beloved fantasy property. Variety brings word that Cogman has joined Amazon Prime’s Lord of the Rings series as a consultant.
Cogman has been involved with Game of Thrones since its inception in 2011. As a writer, Cogman penned 11 episodes of the series. His final credited work on the show was “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” the second episode of season 8. Back in September, it was announced that Cogman would be spearheading his own Game of Thrones spinoff. Unfortunately, he confirmed last month that this is series is no longer in development. Cogman also wrote the screenplay for an upcoming live-action remake of Disney’s The Sword in the Stone.

Details about Amazon’s plans for The Lord of the Rings remain scarce. Initial reports have hinted that the series will feature new stories that “precede” The Fellowship of the Ring. But whether its narrative will also predate Bilbo Baggins’ journey in The Hobbit is still a mystery. So far, all we have to speculate on is an interactive map of Middle-Earth that Amazon released to tease the show in February. Cogman will work alongside the writing duo of JD Payne and Patrick McKay on the unnamed series, which doesn’t have a premiere date yet.
