CBS All-Access’ Star Trek: Picard series is moving forward with a new captain at its helm. Award-winning author Michael Chabon will handle showrunner duties. Chabon has been a member of the series’ creative team from the beginning. Now, he’ll work alongside executive producers Akiva Goldsman and Alex Kurtzman on the show’s day-to-day production.
“Star Trek has been an important part of my way of thinking about the world, the future, human nature, storytelling and myself since I was 10 years old,” said Chabon. “I come to work every day in a state of joy and awe at having been entrusted with the character and the world of Jean-Luc Picard, with this vibrant strand of the rich, intricate and complex tapestry that is Trek.”
“’Daring,’ ‘whimsical,’ ‘humane,’ ‘lyrical,’ ‘celebrated,’: words that describe both Jean-Luc Picard and the literary genius of Michael Chabon,” added Kurtzman. “Despite a laundry list of accomplishments most writers only dream of, Michael shines with the heart and soul of a Trekkie who’s finally found his dream job. We’re so fortunate to have him at the helm as we explore this next chapter in the great captain’s life.”

Star Trek: Picard‘s plot is largely under wraps. Patrick Stewart is reprising his legendary role years after a “dark event” drove Picard away from Starfleet. The first season of the series will explore that mystery.
Santiago Cabrera, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Alison Pill, and Harry Treadstone also star in the series. It doesn’t currently have a release date, but Star Trek: Picard should premiere on CBS All-Access sometime later this year. You can check out the teaser trailer below.
