Star Trek at Comic-Con: New Details on Discovery, Lower Decks, & More

When Star Trek: Discovery premiered in 2017, it signaled the franchise’s renaissance on the small screen. Now, almost two years later, CBS All Access continues to build its roster of Star Trek programming with new shows of all colors. Obviously, Star Trek: Picard is probably the most anticipated project in the works. However, there were plenty of other series that were hyped at Comic-Con this weekend. So set your phasers to stun and check out our breakdown of some of the biggest announcements to come out of today’s Star Trek panel.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 3

We’ve known for a while now that Discovery was getting a third season. But today, we learned of the first major addition to the cast for the new episodes. According to Deadline, David Ajala has joined the series as Clevaland Booker, a.k.a. Book (pictured above). Ajala previously starred on SYFY’s Nightflyers and has also appeared on Supergirl as Manchester Black. His Discovery character reportedly “has a natural charisma and devil-may-care attitude that tends to get him into trouble as often as it gets him out.”

Executive producer Alex Kurtzman also confirmed that the upcoming season “will take place 1,000 years in the future.” Furthermore, he teased that Michael Burnham will be separated from her crew at the beginning of the season at that the Discovery will be getting a new Captain.

Star Trek: Short Treks

Meanwhile, CBS All Access will also release another set of truncated adventures via the Star Trek: Short Treks anthology series. The next volume boasts six installments, several of which were teased in a new trailer. In at least one story, we’ll see Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn all reprise their roles as Christopher Pike, Spock, and Number One from Discovery. Another episode stars Bob’s Burgers and Archer voice actor H. Jon Benjamin and features the return of the Tribbles.

Additionally, the new season of Short Treks boasts two animated shorts and an episode that serves as a prelude to Star Trek: Picard. Check out the trailer below.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

After much anticipation, the full voice cast for Star Trek: Lower Decks has been announced. Variety brings word that Jack Quaid (The Boys) will star on the new animated series as Ensign Brad Boimler. He’ll be joined by Tawny Newsome (Brockmire), Noël Wells (Master of None), and Eugene Cordero (Kong: Skull Island). These actors will voice members of a support crew on one of Starfleet’s more insignificant ships. Fred Tatasciore, Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O’Connell, and Gillian Vigman will fill the roles of the ship’s command crew. Rick and Morty writer Mike McMahan created the show, which currently has a two-season order at CBS All Access.

As a bonus, the streaming platform has also shared (via TrekCore) the first look at the series’ characters. You can view them in the gallery below.
