Don’t panic, but there’s a new adaptation coming for one of Douglas Adams’ most beloved novels. According to Deadline, Hulu is developing The Hitchhiker’s Guide To the Galaxy as a TV series. Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman) are executive producing and writing the potential show.
The first Hitchhiker novel was published in 1978, and Adams subsequently wrote four sequel novels. The initial book was about Arthur Dent, a seemingly ordinary man who narrowly survives the destruction of Earth thanks to his alien friend, Ford Prefect. Arthur and Ford’s comedic misadventures took them to different corners of the universe. There were also humorous interludes from the titular Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy throughout the book.

In the United Kingdom, the initial Hitchhiker book was adapted as both a radio series and a TV show. Garth Jennings directed the feature film adaptation in 2005, which is pictured above. Disney’s Touchstone Pictures released the film. Martin Freeman and Mos Def played Arthur and Ford, respectively. Sam Rockwell, Zooey Deschanel, Bill Nighy, John Malkovich, Stephen Fry, and Alan Rickman rounded out the cast. There were also tentative plans to adapt the other novels. However, the film didn’t do well enough to justify a sequel.
