Who watches the Watchmen? HBO is hoping that the answer is “you.” The network’s first-ever superhero series now has a premiere date: Sunday, October 20.
Watchmen is based upon the seminal comic book series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. However, series creator Damon Lindelof has indicated that Watchmen will not rehash the comic. Instead, Lindelof describes it as a “remix” that will honor the original story. Within the world of the show, the events depicted in the comic happened decades ago. Now, superheroes may be a thing of the past, but masks are everywhere. Even cops have to wear masks out of fear of reprisals against them and their families.

Jeremy Irons is rumored to be playing an older version of Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias, the key figure behind Moore and Gibbons’ story. Jean Smart is portraying FBI Agent Laurie Blake, who was once the heroine known as Silk Spectre. Regina King is headlining the show as Angela Abar, a police detective and possibly a vigilante on the side.
Tim Blake Nelson co-stars as Detective Looking Glass, with Don Johnson as Police Chief Judd Crawford, and Louis Gossett Jr. as Will Reeves. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Sara Vickers, Hong Chau, Andrew Howard, and James Wolk also star on the series. According to the previous trailers, Doctor Manhattan will appear at some point. However, HBO has yet to announce who will portray that iconic role on the series.
