Viola Davis In Talks To Headline An Amanda Waller Series on HBO Max

On the heels of Peacemaker’s runaway success, HBO Max has formally announced its next Suicide Squad spinoff. Deadline reports that a new DCEU series is currently in the works, with Viola Davis in talks to headline the show as Amanda Waller.

If it gets picked up, Davis will also executive produce the series alongside The Suicide Squad writer/director and Peacemaker creator James Gunn, who previously hinted that he was developing a second spinoff series for HBO Max. However, Gunn won’t be writing the new show himself. That honor instead falls to Christal Henry, a veteran of HBO’s Emmy-winning Watchmen series and Hulu’s The First. Henry will also serve as an executive producer alongside Peter Safran.

Davis made her first appearance as Waller in David Ayer’s original Suicide Squad in 2016. She reprised her role in The Suicide Squad last summer. More recently, Davis guest-starred in two episodes of Peacemaker earlier this year. The upcoming spinoff will presumably follow up on the events of Peacemaker’s first-season finale, which saw Waller’s daughter, Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), reveal her mother’s Task Force X operation to the public. But if Gunn’s earlier comments are true, the new series “won’t be as much a comedy as Peacemaker.”

Davis already has experience carrying her own TV show. From 2014 to 2020, she starred on ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder, which netted her an Emmy win in 2015. Davis also won an Oscar for her performance in Fences, and she currently appears as Michelle Obama on Showtime’s The First Lady.
