Who watches the Watchmen? Sister Night does in HBO’s upcoming series inspired by the classic comic book, Watchmen, by Alan Moore and David Gibbons. HBO has released a new poster for Watchmen that places Regina King’s Sister Night front and center as she declares “it’s time.”
Watchmen takes place around 30 years after the events of the comic. Most of the superheroes are gone, but a culture of masks remain. Because police live in fear of retaliation from criminals, they’re allowed to hide their identities behind masks. That’s why Detective Angela Abar has taken on the name Sister Night. She wants to protect herself and her family from The Seventh Kavalry, a racist organization inspired by Rorschach.
However, the trailers for the series suggest that Sister Night’s challenges may be just the tip of the iceberg. Doctor Manhattan, the universe’s only superhuman, has been spotted on Mars. And Adrian Veidt (Jeremy Irons) has reemerged decades after his plans tricked the world into an uneasy peace.

Jean Smart is playing FBI Agent Laurie Blake, an older version of Silk Spectre who has also left her mask behind. Agent Blake’s return raises the question of what happened to her lover/partner, Daniel Dreiberg/Nite-Owl. Daniel’s Owlship, “Archie,” has also been glimpsed in the Watchmen trailers. And somebody has to be flying it…
Watchmen will have its series premiere on Sunday, October 20 on HBO.
