Netflix is investing big time in fantasy shows, and given The Witcher‘s success, it’s hard to blame them. Now, the streaming service is trying to repeat its success with a brand new adaptation of Tonke Dragt’s The Letter for the King. Published in 1962, the story follows the adventures of Tiuri, a young squire who dreams to become a real knight one day. Just like his father before him. And it’s up to His Dark Materials‘ Amir Wilson to portray the son of a famous knight in the realm of King Dagonaut on screen.
“It was a lot to take in at first. Reading these scripts, I thought, how am I gonna be able to do this?” Wilson confessed (via Entertainment Weekly). “I thought it’d be quite hard for me, ’cause I’m quite new, and quite young, and not as experienced as other people. But I had a great group of people around me to help and support me.”

The new The Letter for the King show will also feature among its stars The Lord of the Rings‘ Andy Serkis. He will work side by side with his daughter Ruby on a set for the first time ever.
“It’s been a really interesting dynamic because we’re playing versions of ourselves but we’re not ourselves,” Serkis said. “Where do we cross over as human beings? Where do we crossover as father and daughter? Obviously these characters are very different, but we’re using a shorthand that we know with each other.”
Just like The Witcher, Netflix’s adaptation is hardly the first one ever. Back in the summer of 2008, a Dutch movie starring Derek de Lint saw the light. You can see the trailer of 2008’s The Letter for the King in the player below to make a visual comparison. (The Dutch one is way less grimy.)
