Iron Fist Star Tom Pelphrey Talks Unmade Season 3 Plans

When it comes to Marvel’s Netflix shows, Iron Fist’s sophomore season was definitely considered an improvement over its poorly-received debut. Regardless, the show’s cancellation wasn’t exactly a surprise. However, the producers clearly had ideas for a third season, as demonstrated by season two’s cliffhanger ending. Now, Iron Fist co-star Tom Pelphrey is offering some insight into what could have been.

Pelphrey appeared on Iron Fist as Ward Meachum, Danny Rand’s childhood bully-turned-CEO of Rand Enterprises. In the series finale, Rand accompanied Danny to Asia to uncover more secrets about the Iron Fist power. And while speaking with ComicBook.com, Pelphrey revealed that a third season would have taken on the appearance of a buddy western, with Danny and Rand sharing an adventure.

“There was some talk about what it would look like for Danny and Ward to be going to Asia together,” explained Pelphrey. “There was talk of almost like a … well, I think I can say this now … but like a kind of like a Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid kind of comradery, bonding.”

Despite Iron Fist’s mixed reception, there’s a vocal contingent of fans who would welcome a revival of some kind. And while Pelphrey isn’t sure if this will actually happen, he sounds willing to come aboard if it does.

“Yeah, I don’t know,” said Pelphrey. “I would never say never to pretty much anything. It would all depend on the circumstances and the timing and the people involved. But to your point, yes, Iron Fist could not have ended with a bigger cliffhanger and that must, I mean, that must be extremely frustrating.”

After Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Daredevil got the axe, it was reported that none of Marvel’s Netflix shows could be resurrected on a rival platform for at least two years after their cancellations. Since those shows went off the air in 2018 and early 2019, revivals could potentially get underway this year or next. But that decision rests with Kevin Feige, who now runs Marvel Television following its corporate restructuring last year.
